Thun is located right on the place where the Aare river leaves the Lake of Thun.
Originally a celtic founding (dunum = fortified hill) it has been a popular place for settling and travelling through thousands of years.
After a touristic boom in the 19th century it lost its function of a place for staying of tourists to the villages in the Alps. An advantage for the traveller in our times - it is less touristy and remained authentic Swiss athmosphere of the past.

I didn't realise there were covered bridges in Thun, Ingo. Good page.
Thanks a lot for visiting!
Nice tips Ingo
Me again, coming back to read the four new tips that you have added since my last visit to this page. I have been through this area several times, but have never taken the time to tour systematically and have a proper look at this beautiful lake and town.
Lovely page Ingo! You remind me that I should update my own Thun page.
great page !
