This small town, first mentioned in 1221, is located in the middle of the triangle formed by the towns Bautzen, Görlitz and Zittau in eastern Saxony. The name of the town originates from the slavic "lubij", meaning "the lovely" - which is fitting for the town as well as for the beautiful landscape of rolling hills around it.
When the six towns Bautzen, Görlitz, Zittau, Kamenz, Lauban and Löbau formed an alliance in 1346 the latter became permanent headquarter for their conventions. The town museum has a nice exhibit on that alliance.
Fires destroyed most of the medieval architecture in Löbau, the last one in 1710. What you see nowadays is some Baroque and mostly Historistic styles/Art Nouveau. However, the town is also home to two outstanding buildings: One is the cast-iron viewing tower from 1854 on the nearby hill, the other is Haus Schminke, an icon of modern architecture, built 1930-33 by Hans Scharoun.
These two alone are worth a trip to Löbau but there is more: fans of railways will be excited about the museum in a train engine garage from 1859, thus one of the oldest in Germany, and fans of military history will probably enjoy a visit of the former barracks with museum.

Ingo, fantastic little page about this gem in your neighbourhood. I think at least we once paased Löbau by train. I especially like the König-Friedrich-August-Tower.
An interesting page, Ingo, and some great updates again ! Haus Schminke looks really quite unique !
This town is a lot prettier in the sunshine than in sleet and fog! The tower is beautiful, although I know for sure that I'll never try climbing it, LOL.
next is more time for the places around Dresden :-)
