Meissen is called the “cradle of Saxony”. In 929 King Heinrich I. founded a military camp on the hill. Later a first castle was built on that hill, which became a Bishop’s residence in 1068. Since 1089 the Wettin dynasty, Counts of Meissen at that time, started to form Saxony as a powerful state in Germany.
Meissen has a charming old town with narrow cobbled streets, paved with cobblestones, Gothic and Renaissance houses. The castle Albrechtsburg and the Cathedral, both built on the hill above the old town, dominate the silhouette of Meissen.
The first European porcelain manufacture made the name of Meissen well-known all around the world.
In the nearby vineyards one can do relaxing walks and taste excellent white wine.

Ingo, another set of great new tips here. The Elberadweg sounds like my sort of thing. Well done.
The more I am looking into this area, the more I want to see all very soon. Thank you for your guidance.
Just me returning :)
A really great pages on meissen.. well worth returning too.. Cheers Jasen
Schloss Proshwitz and weekend of the open wineries sound very interesting.
Schloss Proschwitz looks great!!
Too bad that weekend of the open wineries is the last weekend of August, because that's when we have our Museum Riverbank Festival here in Frankfurt. -- I was the first one to look at your nice new travelogue on Schloss Proschwitz.
Excellent infos and great pics, Ingo ! It is a pity it rained a lot while I was in Meissen last time....
