... from other capital cities of nearby countries that once were parts of the Habsburg Empire - like Vienna and Prague. Although Budapest looks back at a history of almost 2,000 years there is very little architecture preserved in the city that is older than, say, 200 years. Most old structures are to find on the Buda hill and at the Roman sites but Pest on the left bank of the Danube is almost completely a product of the 19th/20th century. Thus Budapest is heaven for those who love classicist, eclectic and Art Nouveau/Art Deco architecture. Don't expect much of medieval/Baroque structures like in Vienna or Prague!
My trip to Budapest was primarily for business reasons. However, I managed to see quite a bit of the city after working hours. Besides, working with locals gave me probably a better insight on everyday life than most tourists usually get. The weather did not always co-operate; it was quite chilly and cloudy and only my last (third) day was sunny and mild. Luckily that was also the day with most free time for sightseeing.
I found the city to be very interesting albeit not as beautiful (in my very subjective opinion) as Vienna or Prague. As mentioned in the first chapter I missed architecture older than from the 19th century. Unfortunately I am not *that* fond of eclectic/neo-style architecture. I enjoyed my time in Budapest nonetheless.

Hello, Ingo Thanks for your detailed and interesting page!°
Hmmm, I see what you mean. Not sure there is enough for us to do there ( but nice photos!!). Plus, I would have to live on cake and coffee...certainly not eating any sort of liver:-)
Ingo, oustanding updates since my last visit of your page. By the way: Nyugati pu. is also among my favourite buildings in Budapest.
Came back to check out the rest of your great tips! You saw such a lot on your visit!
Too bad Turandot was such a disappointment -- it is such a fine opera if done well! But I liked your new Budapest tips. That's a moving story of the Imre Nagy monument. I know an opera singer named Nagy, but don't know if he is related.
Ok I started reading... The 19th century buildings are impressive, even to someone who is not into historism... Amazing art nouveau architecture.
Budapest is one of my favorite cities. Glad to read that you had fun :) Auf Wiedersehen.
a really interesting page including a lot of buildings I have not yet seen from inside ! Thanks a lot for sharing, Ingo !
Very interesting architecture. Interesting experience of you in Gundel restaurant... it is a pity to hear the opera performance wasn't good. but maybe next time it will be better? :-)
