Prague/Praha, the capital of the Czech Republic, is located in a distance of only slightly more than 2 hours by train from my home town Dresden. That makes it an easy day trip.
I have been to Prague probably a dozen time (but mostly before the wall came down in 1989) and it has taken about ten years to visit Prague again in 2005 - as a day trip. I will admit that I am not a fan of big cities, and Prague is one. I did like Prague very much in the old times, before 1989, and I still think that Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
On the other hand, I am concerned that the people who live in Prague might give up their wonderful traditions and culture to commerce and mass tourism. Sure, it is great to see well restored facades, restaurants at every corner, take benefit from better service than in communist times (well ... that's another topic) and such things, but I missed the charm of Prague in some ways. Stop - before you shout at me, yes, I am sure there are still non-touristy places, charming streets, cosy restaurants with good Czech food. But these are harder to find than before.
Anyway, Prague is a great place to visit and a "must" if you like old architecture, works of art, culture, beer ...
Update: I have been in Prague in January 2008 for a few days on business plus added another night to meet friends there and do some exploring. Came home with plenty of photos and interesting experiences. |
