"Lobster State" Maine by german_eagle

The official byname for Maine is "Pine Tree State" but for me it will always be "Lobster State". The reason is that I've had the best lobster so far (and first as a whole).

We travelled to Maine from New Hampshire's White Mountains. Friends had invited us to stay with them at their cabin by a lake. Quite an experience I can tell you and oh so typical for Maine. We day tripped to the coast and hopped on a ferry which took us to one of the islands in Casco Bay - it was a gorgeous day and we loved it.

Maine is larger than the other New England states together but it only has a population of 1.32 Million. This means vast un- or little inhabited regions. The interior country is mountaineous und 'unorganised territorry' while the coast is more populated but rugged with beautiful beaches, thousands of little islands and cold, very cold water.

Here's a picture of one of those beautiful sandy beaches at an island in Casco Bay. We spent a lovely afternoon there, just walking and collecting sea shells.

Somehow I must have missed this page before... Beautiful coastal landscapes and autumn colours. The morning by the lake must have been magical.

Lovely coastline! That fortress looks like a mini Pentagon ;) Didn't know that you don't like shopping. To me it seems that you love cheese shopping ;)

Ingo, fabulous page with outstanding photos. I especially like your tip about the number plates. So driving with only twice the walking speed must be similar to driving with a Trabi. *winkygrin*

Hello Ingo, I enjoyed reading your Maine tips, especially the one on the history of lobster fishing. I've never been to Casco Bay or Ogunquit, but I used to work in Maine in the summers while I was a student in New York.
