When visiting Salzburg one travels with certain images in mind. Like Mozart, Baroque architecture, the castle ... and Americans probably with a virtual replay of the movie SOUND OF MUSIC.

The city is all that but also much more. There is plenty of that mentioned above ... and you better quickly turn away from the touristy stuff or you miss the real Salzburg. Sure, Mozart sites are an essential part of Salzburg. But at some point it is ENOUGH.

I visited in March - advantage is that I didn't have to share the city with zillions of visitors and the snow made for some surprisingly beautiful scenery/views/pictures. The disadvantage is that the gardens are NOT green, the flowers are not in bloom ... and you can't just sit at a bench and watch the crowd. Or watch the beautiful nature. Fact is you have to walk a lot and are thankful for each opportunity to sit down indoor.

St. Gilgen and Mt. Schafberg (Lake Wolfgang)

Don't miss an excursion to the surrounding region at any time of the year. March is certainly not ideal for a trip to the lakes, but as you can see the views are still beautiful. Expect the villages by the lakes to be quiet (read: dead) and most hotels/restaurants closed, but again you have the advantage of enjoying all that in quiet and without annoying crowds.

And the mountains are always beautiful! Take a gondola or cable car up to the mountain tops, you can hike in the snow in winter or even better of course on endless paths in summer.

I was in Salzburg spring 2002... never thought it is even more charming during winter.
