I've already talked about tourists doing the Vegas shuffle, so I'll restrict this tip to driving on the Strip. I'd heard about the bad Vegas drivers, but I'm from Miami where we are consistently ranked the worst/rudest drivers, a title our general population strives to maintain with each incident of road rage, so I wasn't concerned. I was wrong. Not only is the Vegas Strip packed, its loaded with aggressive drivers; taxis and limos weaving in and out of lanes, drivers staring at the sidelines and not watching the road, and, oh yes, pedestrians who are not familiar with the concept of jaywalking or are tired of watiing for the long, long light to change. Be very careful driving around here if you insist on having a car.

This is not true. Well, it may be true depending on where you go, but I spent some time alone in Vegas and this did not happen to me. I'd be warned about it, was concerned, but it didn't happen. Most people are generally friendly and I didn't even have the occasion of anyone saying anything out of line. The closest I came to having this happen was while having a drink at Bellagio and waiting for a friend when the man sitting next to me asked if I was local. I don't think he meant anything by it and there was never a time when anyone presumed anything of this sort about me.

Its easy to lose big here. Every hotel has a casino and you have to walk through to get where you're going. I'm not a gambler, but I found myself many times wandering into a hotel by day to escape the heat and sitting at some machine or other. I lost quite a few quarters this way. All of them in fact.

There are any number of people lining the street handing out brochures for escorts, adult shows and anything else they can sell you. Its an inconvenience but is easily avoided. Try a technique I like to call "walking like a New Yorker": walk fast (if you can) and look straight ahead. Most of these people won't bother you. They generally accost the people who pause and look over at them. If they still try to hand you something, just say "no thanks" and keep walking. They don't seem to bother those who appear totally disinterested.

I was approached by a psychic/face reader while having coffee. She wanted $25 to "read my face." Told her I didn't have it and she promptly agreed to do it for $5. Since this was Vegas and I was losing all my money anyway, I gave it to her. She said that I'm going to be very successful and that I'm careful with money. Not exactly accurate since I paid her $5 to read my face. She also said that I have a very dark aura which needs to be cleansed by a spiritual healer, for an extra charge. I decided to find a casino and play some more video poker. Everyone's trying to sell you something in Vegas. Its just part of the town.
