"Lake Mead like you've never seen it before" Lake Mead National Recreation Area by goingsolo

Lake Mead is an oasis in this region where desert conditions are the norm. It is probably the most impressive body of water to be found in the west. The lake is 100 miles long and 500 feet deep at its deepest point during the spring and fall. The lake is the byproduct of the nearby Hoover Dam and it contains enough water to cover the entire state of New York. In a region where water is scarse and lakes even more so, this is an impressive body of water.

I've read that there are over 300 days of sunshine in the west. Well, this wasn't one of them. I had the unfortunate pleasure of visiting Lake Mead when it was not only cloudy, but hail and even snow were possible menu options for the day. Due to the fact that the area was experiencing close to the worst weather on record, I cut my visit to Lake Mead short and headed for drier terrain. Still, its an impressive place and great for a summertime visit.
