Sanibel Island Travel Guide: 215 reviews and 478 photos

Sanibel is the larger of two islands found along the southern portion of Florida's west coast, practically due west of Miami. Sanibel is separated from the mainland at Fort Myers by a causeway spanning the Gulf of Mexico. The island is a treasure trove of white sand beaches wildlife habitats and resorts.

Like its neighbor, Captiva, Sanibel Island has prohibited any high rise development in order to preserve the views and the natural beauty of the island. Beaches are also subject to strict laws and remain some of the cleanest you'll find.

Sanibel is one of those Florida destinations that is geared towards relaxing. This is not a place to live it up until the wee hours of the night. There is a tiny theatre on the island but nightime activities, by and large, consist of wildlife walks and star gazing. This is a place created both by nature and nurture for the purpose of relaxation.

I wanted to clarify that collecting seashells is not illegal on Sanibel Island. You may take all the shells you want, although most people agree that you shouldn't be greedy and take only what you would use. It is illegal to take seashells that are still occupied by living sea creatures. If you find a beautiful shell and it is inhabited please leave it be. There is big emphasis on cleaning up after yourself, take your trash, level any sand castles and fill in any holes you may have dug. This is for the safety of the hatching sea turtles who begin their journeys at night, and often perish after falling in holes, or getting lost when trying to navigate around leftover sandcastles or trash.
