Key West

by goingsolo - last update: Sep 25, 2005

Key West is the southernmost of the Florida Keys and the most popular destination in this chain of islands. The island is 2 miles by 3 miles, which is larger than most of the lower Key islands, but still a small community,

Key West is rich in history and colorful personalities who lived and continue to live here. Key West is also home to Duval Street, its most popular area of bars, restaurants and shops. In addition to ocean activities and on land imbinbing, Key West has several interesting museums, art galleries and small parks.

Despite living in South Florida, I've only made it down to Key West a handful of times over the past few years, The 150 mile drive on the two lane Overseas highway is a time consuming expedition. Still, every time I visit Key West, I'm amazed at the constant activity of this tropical island. Despite the crowds, Key West remains a laid back place which retains bits and pieces of its colorful history and island charm.

But that charm seems almost non-existent during times such as spring break and Fantasy Fest, when Key West is swarmed by thousands of partygoers. Those times present a different side of Key West- the booze and "anything goes" aspect of the island where sensuality oozes as freely as suntan oil. But, on most given days, the strrets of Key Westare filled with those who prefer a more moderate pace- a slow stroll through the quaint Old Town, a leisurely afternoon soaking up the sun or an excursion onto the bodies of water that surround the tiny island.

I'm still working on this page, and its been slow going. I'll keep updating as time permits. Feel free to check back and browse through my thoughts and impressions of this tropical island paradise.
