The Alamo Square district contains about 14,000 refurbished Victorian homes (according to Frommer's.) The Painted Ladies, shown in the distance in the photo, are the most famous of those homes. At one time, many neighborhoods had these impressive Victorian structures, but many were destroyed because the city believed that newer looking homes would be more marketable. Today, you can still tour this area between Fulton and Steiner streets and see the multi hued Victorians. As the owners are allowed to paint their homes whichever colors they choose and allowed to pick up to three colors, you'll find a colorful assortment in this area.
