Victoria, the British in British Columbia

by Dabs - last update: Aug 24, 2006

Inner Harbour and Parliament
If you know anything about me, you'll know that I'm an Anglophile, I love British history and traditions, not to mention those sexy accents! So naturally Victoria, billed as "More British than Britian", was on my wish list for my trip to Vancouver. I begged and pleaded with Robert (rmdw) to take me over there and he finally relented because frankly the sound of me whining is pretty darn annoying ;-)

What I didn't realize how long it would take to get over there from central Vancouver, we caught a bus at 7 am from central Vancouver, changed buses, hopped on the ferry, then a double decker bus and by the time we arrived in downtown Victoria it was almost noon. There was just no way to fit everything in so we decided to pass on Buchart Gardens and because we had such fine weather we also skipped the Royal British Columbia Museum, both of which are supposed to be fabulous. Try to budget two days here if you can!

The heart of Victoria is centered around the inner harbour (harbor to us Yanks), it is here that you will find the most impressive buildings, the Empress Hotel and the Parliament, the tourist information booth and lots of shops and restaurants.
Robert (rmdw) and a Spirit Bear
After Robert quaffed a cup or two of coffee, he was an excellent guide as he had lived in Victoria for a few years and knew his way around. Come to think of it, maybe a little too well, as I got to see where he worked, where he got his hair cut, where he got his oil changed, where he lived and where he.... (hmmm, the last one might be a little too personal, ha, ha). And should I let you explain what "me time" is, Rob? ;-)

Although he was a bit of a bear at 6:30 am when I made him get up to go to Victoria and before he had the caffeine drip hooked up, he's actually on the left in this photo ;-)

What a whirlwind tour, Kristi. I've always wanted to visit Victoria. The architecture, flowers, & food descriptions, especially the chocolates are just excellen. I smiled a great deal, probably because I know Robert!

I was much impressed by the Empress Hotel but doubt I could afford a cuppa here!

Cripes, why does your Chinatown tip have "14 more photos"?! You know... the *biggest* white-trash karaoke bar I've ever been in was in Victoria? And not "big" as in a large venue. Big as in straight-from-the-trailer park people... It was scary!
