Even if you don't want to do the tour of the Queen Mary, you should at least go down to the dock and take a look. The first 30 minutes of parking is free so you can park, take a look and hop back into your car without it costing a thing. If you do decide to board the Queen Mary, the admission price is steep, a whopping $23 just to see the Queen Mary, more if you want to see the Scorpion submarine or have a guided tour. The Queen Mary, an 80,000 ton passenger ship launched in 1934 and named for the wife of George V, was purchased by Long Beach in 1967 and is the top tourist draw in Long Beach. The guidebook says to allot 1/2 day to see it should you decide to go.

Naples is one of two towns in Southern California with canals, the other is Venice, and is just a short distance from Long Beach so if you have a little extra time stop by and take a stroll down the streets with Italian names looking at the eclectic mix of architecture from Victorian to Craftsman to Mission style homes. If the weather is nice you might even spot a gondola on the canal that you can hire for a ride, the guidebook suggests that you reserve in advance. I didn't see any gondolas but that didn't surprise me as it was early March and only in the 60s.

If you are visiting the Queen Mary, you can get a combination ticket that includes entrance to the Russian Foxtrot Submarine, the Scorpion, or if you just want to see the Scorpion there is a separate admission charge, currently $10. I've toured the U505 submarine at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry so I really didn't feel a need to tour this sub. This sub was built in 1972, decommisioned from the Russian Navy in 1994. It was not a captured sub as I thought, instead it was purchased in 1995 by a group of private businessmen, transported to Sydney Australia to The National Maritime Museum and 3 years later sent to Long Beach.
