We flew in and out of Zurich so we decided to stop by and have a look before heading onto Bern on our 1st day in Switzerland. We picked up our rental car and asked if it would be better to drive in or take the train and come back and pick up the car, take the train he said, there's the Street Parade going on today!
Not having read up on it, I didn't know quite what to expect but I certainly wasn't expecting the mob of people we encountered, several hundred thousand people, many of which were wearing strange costumes and techno pop music blaring from every corner of the city. |
| | Zurich is Switzerland's largest city, 370,000+ residents, but even so the visitors for the Street Parade outnumber the citizens! It's hard for me to imagine Zurich without wall to wall people in bizarre outfits but I suspect that being a major center for international finance that Zurich is a bit more sedate the other 364 days a year. |
We only had an afternoon in Zurich, should you have more time there are a couple of highly regarded museums, the Kunsthaus Zurich (Fine Arts Museum) and the Landesmuseum (Swiss National Museum) and a popular excursion is to Uetliberg about 15 minutes away from the center. You can also take a boat trip on Lake Zurich, we saved our boat trip for Lake Geneva. |
