Bratislava on a daytrip from Vienna

by Dabs - last update: Jun 24, 2008

The last time we were in Vienna we had contemplated heading over to Bratislava, my husband seemed to think we could get there by bicycle! Although there is a bike path running along the Danube, I think it would be a little further than I would want to ride, about 40 miles each direction.

This time I was considering taking a train from Prague to Bratislava and doing a daytrip to Vienna but after finding the hotels equal in price to Vienna with a much smaller selection, we decided to stay in Vienna and take a daytrip to Bratislava instead. I think that was a good decision, while we probably could have found other things to entertain us in Bratislava, we felt we had pretty much seen all of the historic center in a day. With a 2nd day, we probably would have headed to nearby Devin Castle or maybe checked out a museum or two.
Bratislava Castle
Bratislava is a perfectly pleasant place to spend a day, although the city has a population of about 450,000, the historic center is fairly compact and can be easily handled on foot, the climb up to the castle wasn't bad at all. You'll find a lot less tourists than you'll find in the nearby capital cities of Prague and Vienna

I got a laugh out of the sign in the attached picture, be sure to enlarge it and see all of the sexually suggestive drink specials!

Pros:"Beautiful historic center without the large crowds"

Did you have a tip somewhere about the Blood Countess? I really can't remember...

Too bad the castle was closed, I would have loved wandering through this historic structure! Also, the UFO restaurant-perhaps visitors had to be beamed up--heh,heh!

Sounds like you foiled the plan to return to Vienna by boat. This looks like an interesting side trip for us next time!

Bratislave looks like a nice spot for a day's outing - I liked all those statues! If you ask me, I think Mr. 'Tophat' Schöner Naci was mad from Day 1. The UFO restaurant is neat - it looks like the Spaceship on Soldiers Field has competition!
