St. Petersburg holds a special place in my heart, it was here that we spent our honeymoon back in the days when it was still part of the Soviet Union and known as Leningrad.
It was only my second trip abroad, back in the days before you could plan trips on the internet so I was unprepared for the beauty and majesty of this city.
On our second visit, the Soviet Union was no more and the city had changed it's name to St. Petersburg. We only visited for a couple of days as part of a Baltic cruise but made the most of it, hiring a guide for a day. The city was even more beautiful than I remembered.
Our third visit was in September 2003 as part of a land package deal through Gate 1. As I'm not really a big fan of organized tours, we headed out on our own quite a bit. We went to Pushkin for the first time and saw the amazing amber room at the palace.
- Pros:Beautiful architecture, grand palaces, interesting history
- Cons:Ate too much food and gained several pounds!

Outstanding page on St. Petersburg especially loved the t'logs on St.Catherine's Palace & Hermitage. Good pros & cons tip on tours.Church of the Spilled Blood??? Maybe it sounds better in Russian!!! I'll take an icecream over a portapotty any day!!

Great page on St Petersberg! Interesting to see that Catherine the Great built a horse statue for her predecessor, there are some very dodgy rumours about her and just such an animal, which I couldn't possibly repeat here...
