Whether you condone it or not, prostitution is legal in Amsterdam and a part of it's liberal culture, if you are walking through the central part of Amsterdam near St. Nicholas church, you may run across some of the windows with the scantily clad ladies beckoning to the tourists even during the daytime hours. The first section we came across must have been the low rent red light district, as the prostitutes were not women that I envision many men fantasizing over. We then came across the high rent district, a couple of the doors had name plaques on them and one even had a credit card sticker affixed to it, I wonder just how that pops up on your credit card statement!!! Even in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon, there were many men window shopping in the high rent section, I'm sure business picks up even more during the evening hours. Pictures of the ladies are forbidden and I didn't even try to take one.

As we were traveling through the canals, they pointed out that most of the houses had hooks suspended from the top of them called hijsbalk, used with a rope and pulley to hoist large, heavy items in and out of homes that have steep, narrow staircases.

Pijlmans Wed Jun 10, 2009 05:21 UTC Great tips from a short visit! Besides a whale or ship, NEMO mirrors the entrance of the IJ-tunnel it is built next to! Cheers, Dennis | hopang Sat Mar 28, 2009 15:03 UTC Lovely Amsterdam page! Bring back fond memories of our trip to that city on several occasions. Thanks for sharing. ~ho & pang | MATIM Thu Mar 26, 2009 20:05 UTC Hi Kristi, like your page about AMsterdam. I learned much from you keen insights. Enjoyed your train adventure, the canal tour, the cultural tidbits, the Hooks on the buildings, & yummy cookies. |
