If you find yourself in Vilnius with a day to spare, a daytrip out to Trakai is a perfect way to spend a sunny warm day.
We took the bus from Vilnius, the castle and the surrounding area is perfectly walkable and indeed an agreeable way to spend a day.
The first stop should be the tourist information, they speak English well and have information on the surrounding area. |
Island Castle The main reason most people visit Trakai is to see the picture perfect island castle. We walked along the road until we got to the ruins of the peninsula castle and then walked by the lake.
To see the old wooden cottages though, you might double back to the street after visiting the ruins and walk down Karaimu gatve. |
Are you ready for lunch yet? If so, you might try one of the Karaite restaurants on Karaimu gatve. If not, continue onto the island castle.
After you are done visiting the castle, you can stay along the lakeside path all the way back to the bus station. It's a nice shady walk and you might see some rowers out practising their sport. |
