I might have missed visiting this palace had it not been for a tip on Fodor's travel board. It's a little harder to get to via public transportation from Riga than Sigulda, the other day trip we took, but well worth the effort.

Rundale Palace is still undergoing restoration work but may someday rival the baroque palaces in St. Petersburg. Indeed, the palace was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the Italian who designed the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.

So what is a beautiful baroque palace doing out here in the middle of a cow pasture? It was built as a summer residence for the Duke of Courland Ernst Johann Biron, a favorite of Russian Empress Anna Joanovna who ruled Russia from 1730-1740

Just wanted to say thanks for such a great tip. I grew up in Riga but never been to Rundale. Now I'm planning a trip to Latvia and Rundale is one the top of my list. I came accross your page and found it extremely helpful. Thank you very much.
