My first trip to Edinburgh was in 1988 on my first trip to Europe, I was on a bit of a budget, stayed at a youth hostel, visited Edinburgh Castle, went hunting for my family tartan (my mom's side of the family) which I didn't like so I bought a scarf with someone else's pattern, ate haggis (ick) and met up with a pen pal that I had since I was in junior high.
I finally found an opportunity to return in January 2006, scheduling a 2 1/2 day stop before heading to the BIG VT meeting in London. 2 1/2 days was not enough time to see everything that I wanted but I made a pretty good dent in the list. January, is perhaps, not the optimal time to travel to Edinburgh, the gardens are not in bloom, it's a little on the chilly side, a few things were closed and it gets dark around 4:30 but on the plus side it wasn't crowded at the major sights. |

toonsarah Mon Mar 26, 2007 14:24 UTC Another great page Kristi with excellent tips as always. I'm amazed at how much you managed to pack into your short time there. The hot chocolate sounds wonderful and the ghost tour great fun | deecat Thu Mar 22, 2007 04:35 UTC We both read and do our research before our trips, Kristi! It's obvious that it works...great tips, especially Calton Hill, the Museum of Childhood, ghost tour, the Castle, your hotel, and, of course, the hot chocolate! | sue_stone Fri Mar 2, 2007 17:47 UTC Excellent, helpful tips Kristi! I really hope to finally visit Edinburgh this year, and now I know where to go for my chocolate fix ; ) | Nemorino Mon Jul 17, 2006 10:09 UTC You've done a total re-launch of this page since your last visit to Edinburgh. Very nice! One year my daughter gave me the Margaret George novel on Mary Queen of Scots for Christmas, and I really liked it. (Also Donizetti's opera about her, of course.) |
