Visiting El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest System, is a popular day trip from San Juan, for both cruise ship passengers and people staying on the island. You need to have the better part of the day to do the daytrip, it takes about an hour to drive there and once there you can spend a couple of hours if you just see the basics or upwards of 4-5 hours if you decide to hike the longer trails.

The La Mina trail and the Big Tree Trail are the two most popular trails in the forest, most of the day trippers seem to start and finish there.

There are several other longer trails in the forest, we opted to hike the Mt. Britton trail which was much less crowded than the Big Tree and La Mina trails.

La Coca Falls

Even if you are not into hiking or are physically unable to hike, you can still enjoy a drive through El Yunque. One of the sights you can see from the highway that runs through El Yunque is La Coca Falls.
