Getting TO/AROUND: Venice has two airports, Marco Polo and Treviso. I booked a flight from London on RyanAir from London Stansted into Treviso, 19 miles (30 km) from Venice and further away than Marco Polo.

I believe there is a ATVO Eurobus that coincides with Ryanair arrivals and departures and the fare is much cheaper than a taxi, 5E one-way or 9E return.

This information is from another website, will update when I return:

"Purchase your ticket at the ATVO counter in the airport and stamp it in the ticket-validation machine on the bus. If you need a ticket from Venice to Treviso Airport, go to the ATVO ticket office in the Piazzale Roma.

You'll need to allow 1 hour 10 minutes for the bus trip, including two brief stops in Venice-Mestre, a suburb on the mainland where you can catch express trains to cities throughout Italy. After pausing in Mestre, the bus crosses the causeway to Venice, which is several kilometers offshore in the Venice Lagoon. The end of the line is the Piazzale Roma, where you can walk or catch a vaporetto (water bus) to your hotel."

Getting TO/AROUND: It was a little frustrating booking a ticket on Trenitalia's website so here are a couple of pointers:

First, you may need to type in the Italian spelling of the city although Venice worked in this case, the Italian spelling is Venezia.

Second, I didn't click on the International tab so the train schedule was showing up with "No" under the "Buy" column. So I figured it wasn't available online. Once I clicked the International tab, you could purchase the tickets.

Third, you must book well in advance if you want to get the Smart Fares. You need to change the class to 2nd class to get the Smart Fares, in our case the one way ticket would have been 15E instead of 25E. I booked almost 3 weeks in advance and the Smart Fares were not available. The Smart Fares are for reservations made 7 days in advance but limited in amount.

Maybe houseboat instead of hotel would have been some funny experience. Great & detailed tips! Hope you're doing ok, and have a good weekend.

Very good points, thank you for the info. I was thinking of an option to stay a day in Venice but to book a hotel in the nearest town around.

Look forward to your new pics and info on your return! Some stay outside of Venice and take public transport in, it's cheaper but not the same, I know
