We were chatting with a British chap many years ago at a flea market near Chicago and he told us that we just HAD to go to the mother of all flea markets, the Grand Braderie in Lille, held the first weekend in September every year. Our first time visiting the flea market was in September 2000 and we used it as a first stop on the way to see Normandy and Paris. In 2006, we decided to go the other direction and visit Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg). |
| A glimpse of the beauty of Lille |
| | Friends assure me that Lille is a lovely city to visit when the Braderie isn't going on but I suspect that the only time we are likely to visit Lille is during the Grand Braderie when the streets are covered in people, discarded mussel shells, new and used goods and piles of garbage and whatever beauty lies beneath is hidden from our eyes. |

Yaqui Tue Jun 23, 2009 18:44 UTC That is a lot of Mussel shells! Looks like they need some kind of recycling program! Wonderful city with such a lovely name! | mvtouring Tue Dec 11, 2007 06:02 UTC The mussels sounded nice, untill I read about the bits of grid etc that you bit into. They usually go nice with Belgium beer ;-) | VeronicaG Thu Nov 8, 2007 21:12 UTC That pile of mussels must have been enormous once the event was over! Good tips on your travel to Lille, Kristi! | barryg23 Wed Mar 14, 2007 22:09 UTC That opening picture is amazing. Looks like an exhibit in a modern art museum. We're going to Lille in June for a weekend, looks like a nice city. |
