We were looking for an inexpensive place to stay over the peak period between Christmas and New Year's and settled on the 2 star Hotel de la Sorbonne. Over the holiday period it was 80E per night, reasonable in comparison to other rates being quoted. The room was a typical small Parisian room with a reasonably comfortable bed, well heated with a small tv (only French programming). The decor was OK but not charming. The bathroom was probably converted from a closet and couldn't have been more than 3 feet wide, you literally could not turn around in it with the door closed. The bathroom was equipped with a shower, hairdryer, soap and shampoo. On day 2 of our stay the hot water heater broke and the shower had only cold water. It was still not fixed by evening so they moved us next door to the Hotel Cluny. I think they intended for us to pay for the night there but were quite disorganized and we ended up not paying for one night of our stay which was reasonable for a day without hot water and having to move twice.
Unique Qualities: We liked the location on a quiet street near the Place de Sorbonne, a 5-10 minute walk from the Cluny Sorbonne metro and less than 5 minutes from the Luxemborg RER which was very convenient coming from CDG. It was an easy walk to the Pantheon and the Cluny museum and not too far to Notre Dame.

On my first trip to Paris we stayed at an Ibis on the outskirts of Paris for budgetary reasons, so I was thrilled when I got a tip for the centrally located charming Hotel Muguet for a reasonable price for our second and third visits. On our fourth visit, we ventured over to the Latin Quarter for a change of scenery but should I return to Paris (or should I say when I return), I will go back to the Muguet.
Unique Qualities: The Muguet is in the 7th, located within walking distance, even with luggage, of the La Tour Morborg metro station. It does, however, involve a change of lines on the metro if you are taking the RER from CDG. Since Paris is a lovely walking city, we also found that the Champs Elysses and many of the other attractions of the city were walkable, the Rodin museum and Invalides are very close by. On our first visit we got one of the small doubles and the bathroom was a typical laughably small Parisian bathroom and the bedroom so small that only one of us could be standing at a time. On our second visit we requested a queen/deluxe room and what a difference that made! The bathroom was roomy, the bedroom was spacious. The bathroom still had a shower, not a tub, which is my preference when I travel. The rooms are equipped with air conditioning and hair dryers, we skipped the breakfast since it was at an additional cost and went to find pastries instead. There is an elevator in the hotel but it is small and the overhead lights are extremely hot, we opted for the stairs more than once. The Muguet is rated as a 2 star hotel, if you travel a lot in Europe, you will know that the star levels are indicative of amenties not of the quality of the hotel.

The Duquesne Eiffel Hotel is located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, close to the Eiffel Tower, Invalides and the Musee Rodin. We like this area of Paris, it's quiet and safe, close enough to the sights to either walk or take a short metro ride, close to the Rue cler area where there are a lot of restaurants and patisseries. We stayed at a budget hotel the last time we visited and were disappointed so this time I was looking for something more midrange and found it at this hotel. The reception staff was pleasant, although not particularly helpful on restaurants. They had a computer set up in the lobby where you could use the internet for free which was very nice. Breakfast was not included in our rate of €102, it was an additional €11 so we got breakfast at a local patisserie instead. We had a standard double room, there are also comfort rooms and superior rooms, some of which appear to have a view of the Eiffel Tower and balconies. We booked the room on booking.com, the rate was lower than their normal rate I assume because it was August when a lot of people avoid going to Paris since a lot of Parisians vacation at that time.
Unique Qualities: Room 58-our room was not overly large but certainly big enough for the two of us. The bed was comfortable with plenty of pillows. The room had a plasma TV with the extremely odd feature of being able to rotate the picture so it was upside down or reversed, air conditioning, minibar with just a small amount of extra space for your own stuff and modern decor. No view from our room. Bathroom-plenty spacious, shower and tub with good water pressure and plenty of hot water, toiletries included shampoo/bath gel on the wall in the tub, lotion, emory boards and a few other things I didn't need. Hairdryer in bathroom.

Nemorino Tue Jun 23, 2009 10:49 UTC Me again, coming back to look at your fine updates since August 14, 2008. You're right that the Museum Pass doesn't get you into Saint Chapelle faster; I suggest going to a concert there in the evening. Thanks for including the link to my Velib' tips! | deecat Wed May 6, 2009 10:22 UTC Outstanding updates. Welcome home! I had not seen your Paris pages since 2004 so I caught up.Lots of excellent, useful tips. Food tips were practical and helpful. You certainly gave lots of choices for activities. Look forward to more. | high_d Mon May 4, 2009 04:26 UTC Nice foodie tips...It seems Paris is synonymous with banana et nutella crepes as well as Angelina's hot chocolate. If I ever get a chance to visit, I am also after the French macaroons. I heard they're just out of this world:)) | rexvaughan Thu Feb 26, 2009 00:19 UTC Ah, Kristi, I just had another visit to Paris here. Thanks, it was wonderful. BTW the Muguet is now our hotel of choice. You should have seen my granddaughters go after the hot chocolate at Angelina's! |
