Because of its canals Bruges is often called 'The Venice of the North' but the town is completely different. It´s better to visit this city in spring or summer seasons to appreciate the beauty of the streets, from the "beffroi" (a high tower) to the canals. In a small city you can find more than in many big towns: from sculptures of Michelangelo to some of the best examples of flammish architecture. Everything is beautiful in Brugge. I remember my trip as one of the most interesting so don't forget to take lots of pictures!
the city of brugge was stablished on the banks of the Zwin river between the
VIIth and IXth century and from this original little village, The Flammish Count built a defense point, named Burg.
One of the symbols of the town is the Beffroi (83 m), in De Markt, built in 1240.
De Markt is the main Square and has been for centuries the most important one in the city. In the East part of De Markt you will find the regional government (Provincial Hoof) and the Post Office,
two gothic buildings whose construction started in 1887. In the middle of the square there is the bronze and stone made statue by Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck and it remember the victory and independence against France.
Near to the mark is De Burg known as the "Achropole" of the village and its said that we can see architecture from 9 different centuries.
Het Stadhuis is the gothic city hall of Brugge, built in 1376, is the most ancient city hall of the Flammish ones.
around the "Dijver" you'll find antiquities and hand made "dentelles" a hand-made typical embroidery.
Museums:
Gruutse Museum: antiquities and arts (Dijver). Visit the Groeninge and de Brangwijn museums too.
Cathedrals and churchs. The city is plent of them. One of the most overwhelming I have ever seen is the O.L.-Vrouwererk (Motre-Dame's Church in French) with an incredible tower of 122 metres.
Within there's a Michel Angelo marble statue, "la Vièrge et l'enfant".
Anyway you'd better visit Brugge/Bruges in Spring or Summer... otherwise it will be too cold and it's usually misty.
