From the Fire into the Belly

Throughout the park you may encounter burned areas or burning areas. This is done to keep the available vegetation in check. If the vegetation got to large than there would be a lot of fuel to create massive brush fires which could kill many animals and may endanger people.

I happened upon one of these controlled burns between Letaba and Shingwedzi along a mopani region. It was fascinating because hundreds of lilac breasted rollers were perched on the periphery of the fire waiting for grasshoppers and other insects to fly out of the fire. Of course they were immediately eaten by the rollers once they escaped the fire. It was quite a site! Thousands of insects met their end.
