Namib Explorer with African Routes

There are really only two options for visiting the Namib Nauluft National Park and Namibia in general. One option is to hire a car which is great because it gives you flexibility and allows you to go where you want when you want. This can be expensive unless you have a several people to split the cost.

The other option is to take a tour with an overland company. There are various companies that offer trip through Namibia. The one that I used, African Routes, was very reliable and a great value for my money. The guide and driver was perhaps one of the nicest guys I have ever met, and the itinerary was solid.

It took the 19 day Namibian Explorer that left from Capetown and ended in Victoria Falls. We stayed one day and two nights at the park. I would have liked to stay more but it was the best option I had.

The cost is about $1000 US and includes many activities.

4x4 Is Really Nice, Maybe Not Entirely Necessary

It is very difficult getting around Namibia let alone the Namib-Naukluft Park without your own vehicle. Unless you are staying at a luxury lodge or doing some sort of overland trip, you have to have your own vehicle. A 4x4 is not necessary but very helpful as the roads are mostly unpaved and some, as is the case in the Namib-Naukluft Park, are in really bad repair. I wonder where all that money for park fees go. It certainly isn't for the infrastructure of the camp or the road.

Try CABS rental car company in South Africa

You will need lots of room a 4x4 has as well if you are bringing all your own gear. You may want to stock up in major towns on food as the camp ground stores have limited choices and supply.

If you have a 4x4 you can also drive to Dead Vlei instead of taking the expensive shuttle. It would be really nice to drive yourself their early before any other people arrive.

Vehicles may be rented in Windhoek or Capetown.
