| Cartagena from the harbor |
Cartagena is quite possibly the best of all the Spanish colonial cities of South America. Built in 1533 Cartagena was the gateway to the sea for the caravans of gold that was drained from Peru and Bolivia. The riches helped built a smartly cosmopolitan colonial city but it also attracted pirates, the most famous being Francis Drake in 1586. The fortifications built to fend off these pirates are astounding pieces of work and there are museums dedicated to just the walls and fortifications.
Cartagena is a prosperous city with chic shops, trendy cafes, international restaurants, clubs, and theater. It's a common stop for cruiseships making it a real drag for the budget traveler as the street vendors become a bit more agressive as they know that the walking ATMS off the ship will gladly despense bills. The best part is walking through the cobbled stone streets or above along the continious elaborate walls that encircle the city is a real joy, especially during sunset. Check out the street and food markets away from the tourist part of the town to capture the real flavor. |
