Melk is one of the most famous cultural heritage sites in Austria and a must for anyone who appreciates rich baroque splendour. The small town of Melk although badly hit by floods in 2002 has recovered well and is worth a wander around and a cup of coffee. Many of the buildings date back to the middle ages and some of the buildings are painted (I liked the cows). Don't miss out on it before you head up the hill to the Abbey!

UNESCO decided to add Melk Abbey to its list and it doesn't take long to figure out why! There is so much to take photos of and marvel at that you will not be disappointed. The exhibition wasn't really my thing but the library, church and painted spiral staircase were beautiful. Take time to enjoy the views and the ceilings (the guided tours only take an hour) as the view of the countryside from the windows is very picturesque. If you make it during high season then the gardens are included in the price of the ticket and they are nice for a leisurely stroll.
