I really like Salzburg. I've been there a few times and was there again for a weekend at the beginning of March. Its a great place to go and it really does encapsulate what most visitors would consider to be their image of Austria. Its quite a small place, great for daytrips from Vienna or an excellent base to explore the Austrian Lake District (Salzkammergut) from.

WHAT TO SEE IN SALZBURG??

At the zoo

Although its quite a small city there is a lot to do. Wander round the streets of the old town and have a coffee and delicious torte (cake) in one of the cafés in the centre, especially when the weather is warmer you can sit outside and watch the world go by! If you have the energy walk up to the fortress otherwise take the festungsbahn to the top, visit the museum and get a great view of the mountains. I would also recommend a visit to Hellbrunn Park and the zoo and if you have extra time there are plenty of day coach trips to the surrounding lake district.

Reading yr Salzburg page just gave me a virtual tour - I must visit there next summer....looks like it will be a busy one for me...so many places to go to outside Vienna
