Brighton is a small city in the South of England right on the seaside and its a great place to live! There is so much to see and do...
The Laines shopping area provides a warren of passages and designer shops enough to make anyone want to explore and is not what I would consider to be typically British.
The North Laine area is well worth a visit on Saturdays when the cafesspill out onto the streets and the shops have outdoor stalls. There are some great cafes around this area and as you might know, I love cafe culture.
The beautiful Brighton Pavillion also adds some exoticism to the city with its Asian architecture, also the city museum is located here.
My favourite thing on a sunny day is sitting in a free deckchair on the pier (not looking through the cracks in the wooden boards cause I hate heights!!) or in the park near the Pavillion.
Along the seafront, there are lots of pubs, clubs and restaurants as well as the Fishing Museum and artists area.
Something else you notice is that Brighton is arty and alternative, its like the Amsterdam of Britain as can be seen in its alternative lifestyle around Kemp Town.
I lived in Brighton for 10 months from 2003-2004. Its such an interesting colourful city and I loved living there from day one!
I lived in an area called Hanover which is located at the top of three steep hills. It is full of brightly coloured houses and I think of it as a British version of San Francisco. You need to be very fit and healthy to negotiate all that walking up hills but the view from the top is worth it and nearby Queens Park is great for sitting in the sunshine and watching the squirrels. Another great thing about this area is that there are some nice pubs - The Hanover with its comfy sofas, the Pub with No Name with its red walls and trendy but homely feel and the Walmer with its colourful lanterns and fish tanks.
The highlight for me was the view of the sea I got when I stepped out of my front door in the morning and the cries of the seagulls circling ahead.
- Pros:Lots to do and lots of events going on
- Cons:Quiet off season, packed out in the summer
- In a nutshell:Colourful, lively city by the sea

Mel, Great page of Brighton. I love your picture of the beach huts in Hove. Thanks for sharing.
May i have a bite of the Brighton candy? Happy Birthday!
Delighted to see a plug for Hove - huzzah! Very jealous of the years you spent living in Vienna - our sons have it at the top of their 'places to live' list...I only hope they make enough money to set Mum and Dad up there too! Were you a language teacher?
Hi Mel, when I visited your Brighton page I was thinking of the wonderful time which I spent there. By the way, everything alright?

When is bonfire night? When I lived on Crete, I worked with a man from Brighton and have always wanted to visit his hometown but have not made it so far.
