Lille is the European city of culture of 2004 and shouldn't be missed!
The city has a fascinating history and the name first appeared in records in 1066. It belonged to Belgium, Spain and Austria and eventually became French under Louis XIV.
A lot is going on at the moment and the city is so well located meaning its easy to get to from Brussels (40 minutes by train), Paris (1hour), just over an hours drive from Calais and on the Eurostar and Euroline routes. |
Lille is in the area of Europe called Flanders which means it has a Belgian and French influence - chocolates (such as these lovely blue cats in "Au Chat Bleu" chocolate shop) and great pastries. I had a great day out and enjoyed getting to know the city. |
