Things To Do: The temple of Aphaia
  • Tip Rating:
  • This temple is one of the most beautiful temples in Greece. It is located in the northeast part of the island on a hill.
    It was built around 580 BC and its style is doric.

    Unfortuately in 1811 parts and statues of the temple have been "taken" from this place and are on display in Munich, Germany.

  • The temple of Apollo was built in 520-500 BC and it was shut down by order of the Christian Emperor Constantine in 354 AD.
    Today only one column remains of the doric style temple.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Paleohora is located on a hill far away from the coast. It was the capital of the island under the Venetians and the Turks when the coast was vulnerlable to piracy.

    It was abandoned by its inhabitants early in the 19 C.
    The houses were all destroyed but a great number of churches and chapels have been restored

  • The tower of Markellos was built in 1802 and it is located near the Church of Aghios Nikolaos. It houses the Municipal Cultural Center.

  • The bell and clock towers are the higher buildings in the town. The church is built of stone taken fro the settlement of Kolona.

     Paleohora is a village of 2000 people. It is about a five minute walk wide and exists entirely on a peninsula on the southern side of crete, not on hill far from the coast. I think you are thinking of Iraklion. :)
