Paxoi Island Travel Guide: 90 reviews and 258 photos

Paxos lies just 9 miles south of Corfu and 10 miles from the Greek Mainland. Its coastline is punctuated with a multitude of secluded coves and bays, its interior in the spring and early summer months a drift of delicate wild flowers. The small satellite Island of Anti Paxos rightfully boasts some of the finest beaches in the Ionian. Their beauty lies in their distance from any source of pollution and the light below the cerulean water is so remarkable that it appears like translucent, ultramarine silk. Half the resident population of 2,600 is centred around the main port villages of Gaios, Loggos and Lakka. Local life here goes on around tourism, many still relying on the 250,000 or so olive trees planted on the terraced hills during the Island's Venetian rule, whose fruits produce something of a nectar, a rich golden liquid full of light and hues of woodland green. Fishing the surrounding seas brings in a catch of swordfish, mullet, snapper, sardines, octopus and crayfish, fresh to the white marble slabs of Gaios Town's market. The Paxiot people are characteristically self-sufficient and many households keep livestock, produce their own wine, build their own houses and manage small businesses with an energy and diligence that is inspiring.
