The TSUTEN-KYO BRIDGE and the Garden of the ABBOT'S HALL are some of my favorite places in Kyoto. These 2 destinations are only part of the large complex of buildings, including the San-mon Main Gate (oldest in Japan).

Do not miss the nearby REIUN-IN Tea Garden - a maze of sliding shoji screen doors and a rock garden.

Perfect, relaxing place to go on the first day in Kyoto after travel. If you are ambitous, the Fushimi-Inari Hike (? page 148) looks great (but hard to do in reverse from reading the guide book directions).

  • Three fantastic tea houses: One at the entry - with a large round window. Perfectly manicured gardens. At the top of the wooded hillside, past the bamboo grove, sits two more tea houses, connected by attractive covered walkways. Unique two-floor tea house design.

Museum and gift stores across the street.

Do not miss the japanese paistry restaurant nearby for one of the best micro-gardens in Kyoto. The rickshaw drivers pull up to a perfect framed window looking into the Kobe fish pond.

  • This is what a castle should look like, complete with a massive stone wall and TWO moats surrounding a complex of buildings and beautiful grounds.

  • The gardens here are distinguished by carefully planned views from the surrounding buildings. The uniquely decorated tea house has windows that frame breathtaking views. Door hinges and hardware are extremely detailed and well crafted. "Considered one of the finest examples of Japanese architecture" for good reason.

Your pages are really nice. Makes me remember my travels in Japan and Czech Republic. Maybe they are too good my feet are itching to get away now ;)
