  • We usually approach the Colosseum from the other side, I guess often coming from Rome station. That is what I did the first time in Rome anyway.........I wanted to see this magnificent structure that since childhood I had heard about. It wasn't until my second trip to this wonderful country that I even wondered about 'the other side'.

  • I never expected to find any kind of peaceful haven in Rome, it seems to be total hustle and bustle, so it was lovely to just amble through this park, sit for a while and study Oriani's image.

  • I remembered that I was walking either up or down Michelangelo's stairway to Campidoglio and this caught my eye.

  • Have you ever wondered what it is or what it was used for?

The Temple of Minerva Medica now in ruins and no longer open to the public even on a good day, has the most unusual feel to it .

I took quite a few photo's of it but never did find out why I was getting the unusual feel.........maybe the history will tell you.

  • It is quite a trek to the top of the castle, but it is an interesting one and before you reach it you will be cheerfully side-tracked a number of times, like me. Anyway once on top, you can get some great snaps of scenes around the area including some of S Peter's and of course this statue, too.

  • Castel Sant'Angelo (12th Century) was originally Hadrian's Mausoleum of 123AD. I was very impressed by this monument and could have spent a lot longer there...........so if you think that you are anything like me set aside one whole day for this place. I would have loved to have spent more time looking at the art and museum rooms where lots of bits and pieces are stored. It is also full of passageways that definitely need investigation...................... enjoy yourself.

  • The Egyptian Obelisk has its home in St Peter's square and at 25 meters it makes quite a centrepiece.

  • Fontana del Pantheon in the Piazza della Rotunda -- right opposite the Pantheon is quite a lovely fountain although people don't seem to congregate around it as much as they do around others. I put this down to the 'competition' -- i.e. the Pantheon is always going to be the biggest drawcard there but there are a number of really classy looking restaurants nearby not to mention the best gelato shop up a side street there (wish I could remember the name but yumm). After the Pantheon keeping your back to it pass to the left of the fountain and take the first street left (I think).

We have a special day every year -- an initiative of an ozzie whose face I can see but whose name wont come -- Everyone from great grandma to the youngest walker gets their gloves and some good walking shoes and gets stuck into picking up and disposing of every bit of rubbish they can find.................
Since this started people have paid more attention to disposing of rubbish more carefully.........seeing the kangaroo here made me think that the idea may have been adopted........??

I liked the colosseum aspects travellogue Carole. And as usual, I like the way you look at buildings, at the city, at history. I never visited Castel Sant'Angelo, may be I will have to do one day; it seems it is one of your favourites on this planet.
