IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS

by unravelau - last update: Jun 10, 2007

Many years ago...well, my offspring say in the

Shark Bay's ancient wreck
Good Old Days...LOL, I would travel to Currarong every year with my family and camp on the banks of the Pacific Ocean, with a tent for protection, a stretcher to sleep on and very little else...ha, ha, ha. I recall that these were the very best of holidays, always cut short because of Mother's homesickness. We would loose at least one week of the holiday because she couldn't see the distance.

Shortly I am to travel back there - to Currarong - and I am sure that I will find so many differences now that I might not recognise the place at all.

The photo here was taken on one of those holidays so long ago, at a beach called (if I remember correctly) "Shark Bay" where we marvelled at the wreck of a ship.....(wonder if it is still there?).....anyway I will be able to tell you one day soon.

I have just found this link with map and a direction to a beach called wreck bay....I think that this must be my shark bay. Anyway the photo of the creek shows changes..... the rocks, while looking about the same shape are underwater where they never were before and they have boats moored in an area that never before had water either.....so the creek has changed a bit but some lovely photos there none the less.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

Tiabunna of vt aka George from Braidwood and I were chatting about my pending visit and has sent this information about the wreck.

He said:-

Re your thoughts on the shipwreck on your Currarong page, I looked up the
community association page which has a map - showing the wreck of the SS
Merimbula on the rocks near Currarong.

I will go and have a look......thank you George.

This is one site that has a bit more info too. Bosom's beach sounds familiar. I think that the wreck in the photo is the Merimbula...... there is another wreck in the vicinity apparently but this one must be Merimbula.
This site:-

George has continued his search and come up with another site that is seeming to confirm that the wreck is the Merrimbula....I can't wait to visit now and see what is left.....compare photos etc. Thank you George.

Here is George's latest discovery:-

Brothers photo of walk 'to the wreck'

WE DID IT

What did we do? We returned to the scene of the crime as it were.

My brother and I after talking about it for about a year, we finally synchronised our calendars and found some 'free' time to travel BACK to Currarong.
We were there over election day last Saturday so joined with the locals (400 strong) in their ARTS hall and voted absentee. The absentee queue was out the door. This indicates either that there were more visitors to the tiny township, or that the locals all slept in.

Hey.........Currarong shrunk......we both felt like Gulliver........

The countryside south of Sydney is also beautiful.

My brother said that this area is good cow country and I believe it because the grass looked so lush that I could eat it.
We are on our way to Currarong south of Sydney .

Pros:"It was quiet, peaceful and a beautiful place to camp."
Cons:"It seemed to take forever to get there from Sydney"
In A Nutshell:"The memories linger on."

Isn't it crazy, I live (relatively) just up the road from Currarong, but still had to look up the map. Really enjoy these 'retrospective' pages.
