Christmas Tree Marker on the Ice Bridge

There are a couple options of getting there in the winter: 1) Most popular - Snowmobile 2) Most expensive - Small Airplane or Helicopter 3) Least likely to try - Walk the eight miles (round trip to town) from St. Ignace on the frozen Lake Huron! Every year when the ice is deemed strong & thick, the year 'round residents on the Island place there discarded Christmas trees on the ice to mark the safe passage for snowmobiles. They call this the "Ice Bridge" and is open sometimes for 3 months or as little as 2 weeks depending on the winter climate. I have taken my sled over twice, and it is an exhilirating feeling blasing across 3 foot thick ice, knowing below is up to 400 + ft deep water!

British Landing is where the Ice Bridge meets the Island. It is a short ride into town form there. The Island does not allow motorized vehilces on the Island, only bicycles, horses & carriages...except for winter, where you can explore any of the roads that are forbidden in the non-snow months.

• Pros:Beautiful, friendly adventure.
• Cons:Limited restaurants open, no gas - plan ahead!
• In a nutshell:This is the Island that rocks year 'round!!!
