Wolfe's Neck State Park - near Freeport

This is a wonderful little park with picnic areas (wheelchair access also!) and some very windy, pretty walks that follow the coastline, and a few expanses perfect for frisbee or other running around games. It's on about 200 acres, and a great stop to get away from the Freeport insanity!

There are islands off the coast where ospreys breed. We saw some when we were there, but it was a bit past season. Beautiful views of Casco Bay.

Directions: Take exit 19 or 20 from Interstate 95, or follow Route 1, to the center of Freeport. In front of LL Bean, turn onto Bow Street and follow for 2.3 miles to Wolf Neck Road on your right. Follow Wolf Neck Road for 2.1 miles to the park on your left.

Lewiston, Maine is not known for its beauty. However, it does have some marvelous architecture and history. At one time it was an economic power in Maine due to the falls and the mills which provided many jobs and much industry.

Recently, Lewiston has had a lot of changes and adjustments to make. Several thousand Somali refugees have moved to Lewiston and it will be very interesting to see how the area evolves. Bates College is in Lewiston as well. I only passed through during a drive up to Bangor, but I had to stop the car to take a couple of photos of this cathedral (actually a church!). I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff.

Mount Battie: A lovely climb and a marvelous view!

This park is just outside of Camden and the peak has a beautiful view of the ocean. There are paths to follow, bathrooms available, picnic tables at the base, and car access if you can't make it up by foot.

In warmer weather people travel up by foot and with the snow some folks use snowmobiles. I'm not a big fan of them due to massive destruction of flora, but as long as people are respectful...

At the peak, you are rewarded with ocean views and if you turn 180 degrees you get a view of the higher peak. There is a cute tower (totally climbable) and a plaque in honor of Edna St. Vincent Millay. The site inspired some of her less erotic poetry.

All in all, a lovely day trip!
