Panevezys is the 5th largest city,and administrative centre,informally referred to as the capital of the aukstaitija region.the city occupies an area of 50squarekm. close to the river Nevezis. compared with the other lithuanian cities, pan. is the most densely inhabitede.its pop. also has the highest & of ethnic lithuanians of all major lithuanian cities.
altogether, 25% of the working pop. is employed at industrial interprises, which produce 80% of the city's domestic product. although pan.is surounded by good agricultural land, it remins chiefly an industrial city, with over 6,500 registered enterprises.
pan. is well known for its TV & electronic equipment,glass & pottery, textiles & clothing.production is exported to over 50 diferent countries.
pan. is located atride the main Vilnius to Riga road, which of the Lithuanian side is largely amodern, four-lane highway. a military airfield close to the city is due to be used for commercial purposes.
panevezys was founded in 1503.it is twinned with the number of cities in western europe:Oss in the Netherlands, Lunen in Germany, Kalmar in Sweden.international relations broadened after the Balto-Scandian Academy was established 1991., which is known for its international conferences, literary research & library.

Panevezys in the begining of XX century

These lands for a long time were almost without people.It hapened so cos of the wars.
Only in the end of XV -the begining of XVI century people started to move there. In the begining of XVI the town of Panevezys was established.
1614 - the first stone house was built.
1727 -the first monks moved to the town and established the first school in Panevezys.
In the begining of XIX century population of Panevezys was 800 people.But in 1897 there were already 13000 people.
After the II World War there were established a lot of factories.Though there were not many schools or universities,the theatre of Panevezys was the best in Lithuania.
