A bike trip to Texel was one of my dream since I begun to drive everywhere as a biker... After cancel it twice because of the bad weather forecast, I finally did it! Even if the forecast were again this year very pessimistic, My friend Anik and I left Brussels full of hope to find a clearer sky... and in fact, we did! We had our share of sun every day and even one full day... and this day was the one we spent on the Island!
Texel was a real paradise for us! The island offers a great variety of landscapes : yellow and green fields with sheeps, wonderful pine forests, great dunes with a very rich fauna and flora, fantastic large beaches, little picturesques villages... life there is very quiet and relaxing with so much nature all around. |

The main town is Den Burg which has also very nice typical north-holland buildings and the west coast is the richest in diversity. The dunes contains natural reserves very known for the observation of birds and fauna so particular of zones that are sometimes under water. De Slufter is one of the most impressive places with a nice point of view on the top ot the dunes. The beaches are also on the West coast and are covered with thin white sand. I went on the beach at the upper part of the island, near the lighthouse and the one in the lowest part of the island : de hors. This last beach is almost endless at low tide! |
Our journey in the island was starting from the Youth hostel in the direction of Den Burg around 10 am. Then we biked to De Koog and then up to the North De Cocksdorp and then back along the water on the northern coast until the lighthouse on the Westcoast where we had lunch. After that, we came back to De Koog and drove in the direction of the South trough the forest of De Dennen and a scottisch-like area until De Hors, the sand area. But drove back to the center through Den Hoorn and then back to Den Burg when we had dinner at 9 pm...tired but very happy of what we saw! I really loved this island and I hope to come back there maybe for a longer trip! Take a look at the tips for more infos and pictures ;-) |
