Everglades National Park Travel Guide: 421 reviews and 914 photos

The Indians called the Everglades Paha Okee - River of Grass. The river is 150 meters wide, but little centimetres deep. Slowly it runs from Lake Okeechobee into the south to Florida Bay. This inimitable marsh supports birds, plants, crocodiles, alligatores, mangroves and many other threatened animals and plants with a wonderful living space.

But since 1920 this paradise have been threatened by humans. Unfortunately, building canals leeds to dry up many parts of the Everglades. So it has lost 4/5 of its originally water amount since 1900.
In 1947 the marsh was declared as a National Park and have been saved till today. Visitors are leeded through the Park on boardwalks and nature trails. The best time to visit the park is in winter when the water is low. Then you can see alligators best. Many birds overwinter in the Park, too, and there aren' t many mosquitoes.
