The Cars And Streets...

In the USA everybody has and needs a car. Some families even have two or three ones. An American says from his car: “It makes me
free. I can drive everywhere and I am faster than by bike.” But is this right? Going by car during the rush hour may take longer than
walking. Taxis and a lot of other cars, motorbikes, lorries and buses move slowly through the streets. They often have to stop at traffic lights and drivers have to drive very carefully. When you want to make your driver’s license you do not have to wait before you are 18 years.
In the USA you are allowed to make your license when you are 16.
If you think in the USA you have names for streets you will be wrong. There are no names for big streets like highways. Streets with odd numbers for example 1,5,93 go from north to south and the others
with even numbers like 4,18,26 always go from east to west. Because of many crashes there are many speed limits of 65 mph (104km/h) or
only 55 mph (88 km/h).

No highway brought the Americans more
on tours than the “Route 66” which is 3598
kilometres long. Over 50 years it was the way
to leave the land. After the trails of the pioneers and the tiltwaggons of the settlers the automobile went into the west. In 1926 the first continental street between California
and the mid west was build: The ROUTE 66
Today it is only a big street which goes like
many other interstate highways through
the whole country.
But a fan said: “The ROUTE 66 is like
Elvis Presley - It will never die.”
