Surfing and mountain trekking in the same day?

The Amazon Basin - Iquitos

An Amazon village... about 4 hours from Iquitos
Peru is a great place full of adventure, mystery, amazing people, interesting toilets, much desperation but, most of all beauty. You can literally be in the Andes trekking in the morning and surfing the warm stretches of beach in northern Peru by the afternoon. A highly recommended destination!

This page is slowly coming together in my free time. Tips are primarily for Iquitos (jungle), Barranco (Lima) and maybe a bit of Machu Picchu and Cusco areas. Be sure to check out my Lago Titicaca page too.

Sacred Valley

also have alot of photos and info from the Cusco area (Machu Picchu and such) but it's already 'covered' in great detail elsewhere on VT, so I'll spare you the redundancies.

Members El_Sueco, cbeaujean and ceciliagh have really good pages that cover these areas in great detail:

Llama with a view!

Machu Picchu

Recently two Colorado residents rediscovered an ancient Incan ruin believed to be an outpost of Machu Picchu.

Llactapata (pronounced "yak-taPA-ta"), or "high city," covers more than a square mile and sits on a ridge facing Machu Picchu across the Urubamba River, 2 miles from Machu Picchu. It has a temple, observatory and a collection of buildings that are believed to have housed Incan workers.

Scientists are now rethinking Machu Picchu's functional history and some believe many of the Inca fled to Llactapata for safety during the Spanish invasion.

This comes at a time when I personally believe they need to shut down Machu Picchu to tourists. It's just getting overrun! Maybe we'll have another site to enjoy in the next 10-15 years! :-)
