"Island Cres: paradise exists" Otok Cres by tijs

They say Cres is one of the most beautiful islands of Croatia and I guess they are right. When we were on the island it was spring and there were so many flowers and the herbs smelled so good. Because the island is so tight you can always see the sea somewhere. Up the hill you have a panoramic view on the sea and the islands in both directions with on the background the high mountains.
The The island has a rough and pure beauty. when we walked over the island. As soon as we were ouside of town, we were walking between rocks and low trees. Old paths with stone walls on both sides can be found everywhere. And sheep, everywhere sheep are hidden between the bushes. There is a big contrast between the northern submediterranean part covered with high and thick woods of oak medunac (Quercus lanuginosa) , hornbeam, elm, and chestnut trees, and the middle and southern parts which are covered with bare grazing lands and dense macchia. The oaks look small but they can be more than 300 years old. A great richness of the botanical and animal world, which boasts more than 1300 species and an exceptional number of edemic species, is a genuine challenge to all nature lovers. Cres is also one of the last habitats of a rare bird species - griffon vulture.
The little main town of Cres with about 23.000 inhabitants has a Venetian look, with several 16th century manor houses along the harbour. The town has never grown after the 16th century and has also recently kept its charm of a fishing town. In the inner harbour are some restaurants and an old market where you can buy fresh vegetables and fruit each morning. It's nice to stroll through the narrow streets and find wonderful examples of Venetian architecture and renaissance churches. A promenade to the west leads to some hotels and campsites between the pine-trees, where you can relax on the rocky beaches.
