  • Khiam is a small town in the south of Lebanon. During the Israeli occupation this was the site of a prison. This prison is now a museum and it shows the horrible conditons for the prisoners. After the Red Cross had visited the prison (in 1996 I think) the conditon became a little better.
In the museum there is a small souvenirshop (with Hizbollah things) and a restaurant.
When I was there in August 2002 a permision to visit the region was a must. The permision was obteined from the military in Saida (Sidon) for free and without any problems.

  • The name of Beaufort Castle in Arabic is Qala'at ash-Shaqif. It is an old cruzader castle on a top above the village of Arnoun. It is not much left of the castle as the Israelis desroyed big parts of it as they left in May 2000. The view from the top of it excelent.

  • Qana is a village 15 km southeast of Sour (Tyre). In 1996 Israel shelled the UN-base here, killing many UN-soldiers and civilians who had taken shelter at the base. About 100 were killed and more were injured. There is now a memorial of the victims by the UN-base. You can walk around the UN-base which is now abandoned. Nearby there is a museum with an exibition by several Lebanese artists showing the horrors and the antagonism from the war.
Other things to see in Qana are some early Christian rock-carvings and a grotto. It is debated if Qana is the same place as the biblical Qana, where Jesus turned water into wine.

  • Lebanon - Inscriptions at Nahr al Kalb

  • At Nahr al Kalb you find some inscriptions done by armys that have passed since antiquity, from Nebuchadnezzar, Ramses II and the Assyrians to General Gouraud and Christian militias during the civil war.
The gorge used to be very difficult for armies to cross and it became a tradition to leave a memorial carving after passing successfully. Nowdays the highway is passing by with a constant sound of traffic.
Direction: Between Beyrouth and Jounieh, just by the highway. It can be difficult for a bus to dropp you on the exact spot. You could easily walk a few hundred meters from the junction where the road leads to Jeita.
