Gerbeaud House: Gerbeaud

  • Restaurant Name: Gerbeaud House

I thought that Gerbeaud was going to be a touristy caf? as it is mentioned in so many guidebooks as the most famous caf? in Budapest, a caf? which has been a meeting place for the elite in Pest since 1858. But the morning I was there there were only a few other customers there and they spoke Hungarian.

I only had a hot chocolate, but it was delicious and thick. A hot chocolate is 650 ft (March 2006) and whipped cream costs extra. An extra 12% is added to the bill for service.

I liked the big rooms, high in ceiling and the big windows towards the square, and the sunlight coming in.

    1000 Tea

  • 1000 tea is a great place for tea lovers. As you sit down you will get a thick menu with teas from all over the world, all of them explained in text. The tea is then served in different teapots and different cups depending on which tea you ordered. You can sit at a table or you can sit on a pillow by a low wooden table. In summertime you can also sit in the courtyard. It is a cosy place, which can’t really be seen in the picture as it is taken with flash. A pot of green tea was 530 ft.

  • After walking around for a while not seeing any other restaurants than Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Burger King and Subway we passed Corso Etterem (restaurant) and immediately went in as we were very hungry. Other people there seamed to be other tourists.

I had trout with lemon butter and parsley potatoes. The fish was good, but not the lemon butter. The price for the meal was 1750 ft. The white house wine was
200 ft/dl. On the bill 10% was added for service. For a while a man played soft music on the electric piano.

    Dom Etterem

  • Dom Etterem is a small restaurant next to St Stephen’s Basilica. The customers are mainly tourists it seams. I had a puszta stew in red wine for 2050 ft.

As in all other restaurants we visited in Budapest the price for wine were per decilitre (or bottle or 0,5 litres). My sister had a white wine she liked very much, a Bock. She asked for another glass of the same sort but instead got something much sweeter. She went to change and they opened a new bottle for her. We got the impression they had just given her something that was already opened (a Tokaj) as they didn’t want to open a new bottle. Except this everything was okej and nice.

    Robinson Restaurant

  • The food at Robinson is really good. My sister says that the salad with deer meet that she had is one of the best salads she ever had. The pumpkin soup with pistachio nuts that I had was delicious. The price for what I had was:
    pumpkin soup 850 ft
    Coke 330 ft
Ice cream with fresh fruits 850 ft
There were a few other people at the restaurant and they all seemed to be on business lunch. In the evenings there is live Latin-guitar music. When it gets warmer weather the outdoor terrace, by an artificial lake, opens and it is a very popular place.

  • Coming to a Greek restaurant I felt I would like to have something with a lot of aubergine. I ordered moussaka and guess if I was disappointed when it was made of mostly potatoes and only two tiny bits of aubergine. Otherwise the meal was okay. The moussakla was 1890 ft and two glasses of wine 1680 ft. we were there a Tuesday evening in February and were almost the only customers. The service was good and Greek music was played in the background (not live).

  • Postakocsi Etterem is a restaurant in Obuda, by the square Fo ter. It seems to be a restaurant with good food, but we just sat down to rest and have a beer. We came before dinnertime and were the only customers. I liked the table we had, as it was facing the window and the square.
A bottle of Drecher is 450 ft.
A small glass of Stella is 350 ft.

    Cafe Anna

  • I saw there is a caf? called Caf? Anna on Vaci utca, but the Caf? Anna in this tip is a small caf? situated near Great Market Hall. I liked the interior and the orange lamps.
It was my sister who was hungry when we went here. She had a salad (1350 ft) and ros? vine (700 ft), both good. I had an Irish Coffee (1200 ft) which was not so good, maybe because the whisky in it was not Irish. I who wanted to continue sight-seeing thought it took a very long time before the salad arrived.

  • There is a Café Miro in Mammut shopping centre , which has great food and deserts. My sister had a delicious beef with grilled vegetables and I had a club sandwich with broccoli. For the deserts the cakes looked yummy but we took the big ice creams instead. The price for the things I had was:
    coke 310 ft
club sandwich with broccoli 690 ft
ice cream Dolce Vita 490 ft
    jasmine tea 340 ft
Another 10 % is added on the bill for service.
