The Theatre Barn in Hedemora

The Theatre Barn

The Theatre Barn was built in 1820 as a grain barn and theatre and is the oldest theatre in its kind in Sweden. The theatre is on the upper floor and has been renovated. In summertime amateur players have performances here. In the building there is also a small theatre museum. Between the 15/5 and 30/9 you can book guided tours and the entrance is then 25 kr/person plus 100 kr for the guide.

Dalälven from Viks bridge

River Dalälven

Dalälven is the third longest river in Sweden, it is 520 km long. The river passes outside Hedemora (and runs through lake Hovran), and is a beautiful feature in the landscape. Around Hedemora there are many forests, but around the river there is more farmland.
The picture is taken about 7 km from Hedemora, on the way to Garpenberg.

Hedemora Open-Air Museum

Hedemora open-air museum is one of the oldest in Sweden. The farmhouses, one main building and some barns, are from the 18th century and has been moved from the surrounding area to their present place. The museum was opened around 1910. The open-air museum is beautifully situated by lake Hönsan and is a very nice place to visit in summer.

During the summer months it’s open daily between 10.30 - 18.30. For guided tours it is necessary to book in advance. On Midsummer Eve there is a traditional celebration at the museum.
There is also a café open the whole summer.

Lake Hovran

Just outside Hedemora is lake Hovran, a lake famous for its birdlife. There are some 170 different species of birds, and bird watching towers are built around the lake, in Nibble, Lilla Älvgången and Sörbo. It is also a good lake for fishing. Sometimes beavers and elks can be seen. River Dalälven runs through Hovran.

Lake Hönsan, Hedemora - Hedemora

Lake Hönsan, Hedemora

Lake Hönsan

In the summer you can go for a swim in lake Hönsan. A white diving (jumping) tower has been there for a long time. The original one got rotten and was torn down. It was not going to be replaced as the Municipality wanted to save money. As people in Hedemora loved the tower and “it had always been there” money was collected and the tower could be rebuilt.
