The landscape in Cappadocia looks like nothing else with its strange rockformations. The vulcanic tufa rock has been erroded by wind and water for millions of years. The tufa stone is porous and soft until it comes in contact with air and it has been perfect for carving churches and houses.

Tourists come to Göreme to see the amazing landscape, visit the rock cut churches with painted frescos, the underground cities with their labyrinths of rooms and corridores and to walk in the beautiful valleys.

The flight in a hot air balloon sounds really great. I have never done that, though I used to fly around in helicopters a lot when I was in Vietnam.

I'm thinking of visiting Cappadocia in summer and have heard that ballon rides are the attraction not to be missed. Although I've neve done it and for me the price is rather high, I think I'll g for it.

What a view from the hot air balloon! You certainly have a great hot air balloon ride. The underground cities, Ihlara and Pigeon valleys indeed look wonderful to visit and explore. So are the Fairy Chimneys and Selime Monastery. ~ho & pang

Thank you Malena for bringing back memories about this area! I'm working at my own Goreme page now which is coming soon after Kaymakli! Your trip by balloon was exciting I believe. I didn't take this opportunity unfortunately (it was rainy that morning).

Amazing geological structures with human dwellings built into them. What a great way to see them on a ballon ride. Thanks for sharing this fantastic adventure :)

Stopping by for some inspiration and useful tips before I return to Turkey in October - this time to Cappadocia and more of Istanbul. Many thanks for the tips and wonderful pictures from the balloon.
